Die to Run: Last Person Standing

A gritty endurance race where every hour starts with a roll of the die. The distance changes. The clock does not. Be the last runner left standing.

One hour. One roll. No excuses.

Backyard ultra meets bad luck.

01

Roll

Five minutes before the hour, the die is rolled live to decide the next loop distance.

02

Run

Runners head out on a flat paved out-and-back course at Hatbox Sports Complex.

03

Return

Finish inside the 60-minute cutoff and be back in the corral, or your race is over.

How it works

The die gets meaner.

Early loops give runners a chance to settle in. As the race goes deeper, low rolls start turning into longer miles.

Try the die

?
Just for fun. Race-day rolls happen live.
Loops 1–25 or 6 becomes 4 miles
After 6 hours1 becomes 3 miles
After 12 hours2 becomes 4 miles
After 18 hours3 becomes 5 miles
After 24 hours4 becomes 6 miles

Course map

See every possible turnaround point.

The route starts and finishes at Hatbox Sports Complex. Each die roll sends runners to a different turnaround point on the same paved out-and-back path.

From the race director

Alan Cox

Built by a runner, for runners.

Die to Run was created to be different — part backyard ultra, part strategy game, and part mental battle. The format is simple, but the die changes everything.

If you want a race that feels personal, unpredictable, and a little unhinged in the best way, this is it.

FAQ

Questions runners usually ask.

Can I walk?

Yes. You can run, jog, or walk — but you still have to finish the designated distance within the 60-minute cutoff.

Can I have a crew?

Yes. Crew support is encouraged, but crews must stay in the designated base camp area and may not assist runners on the course.

How long will the race last?

As long as it takes. The event continues until only one runner remains who can complete one final loop.

What happens if I miss the start of a loop?

If you are not in the starting corral when the next loop begins, you are eliminated.

What if the weather is bad?

The race will proceed rain or shine unless conditions are unsafe. In severe weather, the race may be paused or canceled at the Race Director’s discretion.

Official rules

Simple rules. Hard finish.

General Rules

The goal is simple: be the last runner to complete a lap.

The race begins promptly at 7:00 AM on May 15, 2027.

All runners must complete the designated distance within the 60-minute time limit to be eligible for the next lap.

If you are not in the starting corral when the next lap begins, you will be disqualified.

Course & Aid

The course is a flat out-and-back on the paved Hatbox path. The distance changes each hour, so the turnaround point changes too.

Runners must stay on the marked course and reach the designated turnaround point for that hour.

Personal aid is not allowed on the course. Aid is located at the main start/finish area. Runners may carry their own supplies.

Elimination & Winner

A runner is eliminated if they fail to complete the loop within the cutoff or are not in the corral when the next loop begins.

The race continues until only one runner remains capable of completing one final loop. That runner is the winner. Everyone else is a DNF.

Race Conduct, Weather & Refunds

Be courteous to other runners, crews, volunteers, and park visitors. Do not litter.

The Race Director has final say on all matters and may disqualify any participant for unsportsmanlike conduct or rule violations.

Registration is non-refundable and non-transferable for any reason, including weather-related cancellation.
